In an average, the solves that survive the trim — the ones actually being averaged after the fastest and slowest are dropped.
The phrase usually shows up as ‘counting 19’ or ‘counting DNF’: a bad solve that was not bad enough to be dropped, so it stays in and drags the whole average with it.
